Melissa Casias worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory — the U.S. Department of Energy facility in New Mexico that has led American nuclear weapons research since the Manhattan Project. Her work was associated with advanced propulsion research at one of the world's most significant classified science facilities.

Casias disappeared in 2025. Her case has been noted alongside those of Monica Jacinto Reza and Steven Garcia as part of what some researchers describe as a cluster of disappearances involving individuals working on advanced materials and propulsion at sensitive national security facilities.
