The Socorro Incident

On April 24, 1964, Police Officer Lonnie Zamora was chasing a speeding car near Socorro, New Mexico, when he heard a roar and saw a flame in the desert. He drove toward it and encountered an egg-shaped craft on legs, approximately 15–20 feet long, with two small figures in white coveralls nearby. The figures appeared startled by his arrival. The craft then rose, emitted a roar and blue flame, and departed at high speed.

The site showed physical evidence: scorched vegetation, impressions in the soil, and burn marks consistent with Zamora's account. Project Blue Book investigators, including Dr. J. Allen Hynek, concluded this was one of the most compelling and inexplicable cases in their files. Hynek described Zamora as an honest, reliable officer.

Why It Matters

The Zamora case is significant because of its physical trace evidence and the unimpeachable credibility of its sole witness. It remains one of the few cases that Project Blue Book officially left as "unidentified" without a plausible conventional explanation.
