First on the Scene

Airman First Class John Burroughs was among the first U.S. Air Force personnel to encounter the unexplained lights in Rendlesham Forest on the night of December 26, 1980. He approached a structured craft in the forest, reported disorientation, and later experienced significant health problems — including cardiac issues — that he and his attorneys attributed to radiation exposure during the incident.

After years of fighting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for recognition, Burroughs received a landmark VA settlement in 2015 — a settlement that effectively acknowledged his injuries were service-connected without officially confirming the cause. His medical records relating to the incident remain classified.

The VA Settlement

The settlement is legally significant: the U.S. government implicitly validated that something happened in Rendlesham Forest that injured John Burroughs in the line of duty, without stating what that something was. Burroughs has continued to advocate for the release of his classified medical records and for full disclosure of what occurred during the incident.
